In the 70s, Leif J. F. Callioscott was a little known Swedish child psychologist. He was an experimental academic who developed a theory on the Audible Transitional Object which demonstrates how play and fantasy are the true crucial cornerstones in child development. Furthermore he postulated that exposure whilst young to fantastical, magical or “unreal” sonic elements (disembodied voice, unidentifiable sounds, nonsense language) are what provides an understanding of the world and helps to create a physical picture of reality.

Callioscott tested his theories through the creation of workshops that allowed adults and children to explore various different soundscapes and sonic textures. The proceedings of these sessions often involved the layering of sine waves in the octatonic scale to encourage experimentation in timbre, overtone-phasing and bitonal composition, as well as a collaging of physical objects hit, strummed or thrown around the room; one session in 1972 lasted nearly 12 hours.

The ‘Audible Transitional Object’ Playscripts utilise adults to facilitate children's play and fantasy to assist in the radical reality building. This instructional tape is a re-enactment of several of these workshops following the play-scripts written by the theorist. It is our hope that the public will create-their-own workshops with kids and explore fantasy through his ‘Mini & Macro Modes’.

We are : the visual artist, pedagogue and recent graduate from MKH Francis Patrick Brady and Malmö based musician and composer John B McKenna. Our collaboration is intended to facilitate and re-examine Callioscott's work in modern times as well as form a mixture between practice and research or, as Callioscott would have it; reality and fantasy.

Leif J.F. Callioscott var en svensk barnpsykolog som inte många kände till på 70’talet. Han var en experimentell akademiker som utvecklade teorin om The Audible Transitional Object som visar hur lek och fantasi är de verkliga och avgörande hörnstenarna i barnutvecklingen. Vidare postulerade han att exponering i tidig ålder för dessa fantastiska, magiska eller "orealistiska" ljudelement (röst utan kropp, oidentifierbara ljud, låtsas språk) ger en förståelse för världen och bidrar med att skapa en fysisk bild av verkligheten.

Callioscott testade sina teorier genom att skapa workshops som gjorde det möjligt för vuxna och barn att utforska olika ljudbilder och ljudkonstruktioner. Forskningssessionerna innebar ofta varvning av sinusvågor i okatonisk skala för att främja experiment i klangfärg, övertonfasning och bitonal komposition samt att en kombanitaion av fysiska föremål slogs på eller kastades runt i rummet; en session 1972 varade nästan 12 timmar.

"Audible Transitional Object" Playscripts, som Callioscott har skrivit, beskriver barnalek och fantasi blandad med verklighetskonstruktion och utnyttjar underlättande av vuxna. Detta instruktionsband är en återskapande av flera av dessa workshops, och är bildat efter de teorier som skrivits av teoretikerna.
